India Has Largest Diaspora Population in World: UN

According to the ‘World Migration Report (2018)’, published by the International Organisation for Migration, a UN agency, the Indian diaspora is the world’s largest, with slightly more than 15.6 million Indians residing overseas. Of the international migrants (people living outside the country of their birth) which was estimated at 243 million in 2015, the Indian diaspora constitutes nearly 6%. After India, Mexico has the second largest diaspora.

Cabinet nod for Bill making instant triple talaq a crime

The Union Cabinet approved a Bill that makes instant triple talaq or talaq-e-biddat a criminal offence and a Muslim husband resorting to instant talaq can be jailed for up to three years.

  • This Bill will adjudicate all cases of instant triple talaq across the country except Jammu and Kashmir.

PM Modi inaugurated 60 MW Tuirial hydropower project in Aizawl

The 60 MW Tuirial hydropower project in Aizawl, Mizoram was inaugurated by PM Narendra Modi. He said that it is the first large hydropower project in Mizoram which will boost the socio-economic development of the state.

Vice President inaugurates World Conference on Vedas

Vice President of India, M. Venkaiah Naidu inaugurated the World Conference on Vedas, “Vishwa Ved Sammelan” in New Delhi. He said, Yajurveda mentions that the knowledge of Vedas is meant for the well-being of the entire humanity. The Vedas do not refer to any caste or community.

President of India Lays Foundation Stone of ‘NYAYA GRAM’ Project of High Court of Allahabad

The President of India, Shri Ram Nath Kovind, laid the foundation stone of the Nyaya Gram project of the High Court of Allahabad in Allahabad.

Meghalaya launches India’s first social audit law

Meghalaya became the first state in India to operationalise a law that makes social audit of government programmes and schemes a part of government practice after the state government launched ‘The Meghalaya Community Participation and Public Services Social Audit Act, 2017’.

  • So far, social audits of government programmes have been done at the initiative of civil society organisations. These social audits had no official sanction

‘Exercise Ekuverin’ began in Belagavi 

India and the Maldives began Exercise Ekuverin, their eighth annual joint military training event, in Belagavi, Karnataka. The focus of the exercise is to acquaint both armies with each other’s operating procedures in the backdrop of counter-insurgency/counter-terrorism operations

WHO certifies Gabon as polio free

The World Health Organisation has declared Gabon a “polio-free country”, given the lack of new reported or suspected cases in the central African country. Now the disease is endemic only in Afghanistan and Pakistan, where the WHO recorded four cases this year — two in each country. 

Oxford Dictionary has announced ‘youthquake’ as the word of the year

The Oxford English has come out with its Word of the Year, and it’s a word called — youthquake. Oxford’s definition is as follows: “A significant cultural, political, or social change arising from the actions or influence of young people.”

India is the first country where AIIB has committed over $1-b of financing

Danny Alexander, Vice-President and Corporate Secretary of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) announced that India is the first country where the Bank has committed more than $1 billion of financing. He also added that AIIB is also interested in other projects of the country



BUSINESS

Carlyle Group completes GE Capital stake buy in SBI Card

State Bank of India said that the Carlyle Group has completed the acquisition of GE Capital’s entire 26 percent stake in SBI Card, which is the second largest and credit card issuer in the country. With this SBI owns 74 percent and Carlyle holds 26 percent in each of the two entities.

Nepal hosts first International Wheelchair Cricket Tournament

The first ever International Wheelchair Cricket Tournament was organised in Nepal’s Kathmandu. The tournament has participation of teams from Nepal, India and Bangladesh.
