Matunga becomes India’s first railway station run by women
Matunga suburban railway station in Mumbai has become the first station in India to be run by an all-women staff. A total of 30 women staffers, including eleven booking clerks, five Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel and seven ticket checkers are working under station manager Mamta Kulkarni, who was the first female station master in Central Railway’s Mumbai division.
Reliance Jio, Patanjali among 10 most influential brands
Baba Ramdev-led Patanjali Ayurved has been featured among the top 10 most influential brands in India along with Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Jio, according to research firm Ipsos.
- Google has been ranked at the top, while Microsoft and Facebook are ranked second and third, respectively.
- SBI, the only financial institution on the list, moved up four ranks to the fifth position.

Govt launches GST training programme
The government has launched a GST training programme to skill around two lakh youths in six months to handle tax compliance issues like invoice making.
- The people would be trained under the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY).
- The new training course would cater to the need of GST trained professionals to help businesses in areas such as registration and calculation of tax liability under the new tax regime
President of India presents 2.5 croreth Ujjwala connection
President Pranab Mukherjee presented the 2.5 croreth Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) connection at Raghunathgunj, Murshidabad in West Bengal. This marked the completion of release of 2.5 crore LPG connections to women beneficiaries from below poverty line (BPL) households across the country under the PMUY.
- PMUY was launched by PM Narendra Modi on 1st May 2016 at Ballia, Uttar Pradesh. It is a scheme to provide clean cooking fuel to the women belonging to the ‘Below Poverty Line’ (BPL) households across the country.
- The scheme aims to provide LPG connections to 5 Crore BPL households by 2019 and is a part of larger program of adding 10 Crore new LPG connections by 2019 to achieve full coverage of connections in Indian households
India tops global index of countries with the most confidence in their government: Report
The latest edition of the OECD’s Government at a Glance report states that 73 per cent Indians have faith in the Narendra Modi led NDA coalition, the highest in the world.
- India is followed by the Canadian government headed by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, which has the confidence of 62 per cent citizens.
Harvard scientists create most advanced quantum computer yet
A US-Russia research collaboration at Harvard has created the world’s most advanced quantum computer with 51 quantum bits, or qubits– the fundamental unit of information in a quantum computer. Scientists believe a 50-qubit quantum machine can outperform the world’s most powerful computer.

Maryam Mirzakhani, an Iranian- born mathematician who was the first woman to win the coveted Fields Medal, has died of cancer. She was 40.
