India’s Kumbh Mela win UNESCO ‘intangible’ status

India’s Kumbh Mela has been recognised by UNESCO as an “intangible cultural heritage of humanity”. The Kumbh Mela, held in Allahabad, Haridwar, Ujjain and Nasik, represents a syncretic set of rituals related to worship and cleansing in holy rivers.

  • Along with this, the Neapolitan art of pizza twirling has also joined Unesco’s list of “intangible heritage”.

Centre offers Rs 2.5 lakh for every inter-caste marriage with a Dalit

Removing the income ceiling of Rs 5 lakh per annum, the Centre has opened its scheme meant to encourage inter-caste marriages to all couples where either the bride or the bridegroom is a Dalit.

  • The ‘Dr Ambedkar scheme for social Integration through inter caste marriage’ was started in 2013, with a target to provide monetary incentive to at least 500 such inter-caste couples per year. As per rules, such couples whose total annual income does not exceed Rs 5 lakh are eligible to get a one-time incentive of Rs 2.5 lakh from the Centre.

Govt sets up panel to address NPAs in the power sector

The government has set up a high-level committee headed by NITI Aayog chief executive Amitabh Kant to address the problem of stressed assets in India’s power sector. Non-performing assets (NPAs) in power generation accounted for around 5.9% of the banking sector’s.

Aadhaar linking deadline will be extended to March 31, 2018: Centre to SC

The Union government informed the Supreme Court that it will extend up to March 31, 2018 the deadline fixed for mandatory linking of Aadhaar with various schemes, including one’s bank accounts. However, said the last date for linking Aadhaar to mobile services will remain February 6, 2018 in pursuance of a judicial order.

PM Modi inaugurates Dr Ambedkar International Centre in Delhi

A day after the 61st death anniversary (6th Dec 2017) of Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Dr Ambedkar International Centre in New Delhi and said that it would become an important institution for research and economic issues.

Japan-India Act East Forum with focus on India’s North East launched

The Japanese Embassy and the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) inaugurated a “Japan-India Act East Forum” in New Delhi, which aims to expand cooperation between Japan and India in India’s North Eastern Region. The Forum aims to strengthen the relationship between Japan and the North Eastern Region, as well as that between Japan and India.

India Center Foundation (ICF), a not for profit and non-governmental organisation, which has been working for over two decades towards nation’s socio-economic development, brings to India for the first-time ever, The Global Partnership Summit (GPS) 2017 which is scheduled to be held at Aerocity, New Delhi from 11th to 14th December 2017.

US breaks 70-yr-old policy, recognises Jerusalem as Israeli capital

US President Donald Trump has recognised Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, breaking nearly 70-year-old US policy. The US has become the first country to recognise the status of Jerusalem which is claimed as the capital by both Israel and Palestine. Jerusalem’s status is considered one of the biggest obstacles in reaching a peace agreement between Israel and Palestine.

Australian legalises same-sex marriage

Australia has became the 26th country in the world to legalise same-sex marriage. The legislation passed with a majority that wasn’t challenged.

Government ropes in ICICI Bank to enable cashless payments on e-NAM

The government has engaged private lender ICICI Bank to enable online payments at 470 mandis integrated with national portal of electronic National Agriculture Market (e-NAM). The effort is to provide seamless experience for making online payment of trade and services undertaken on the e-NAM platform.

Axis Securities gets NCDEX membership

Axis Securities, a subsidiary of Axis Bank, has become the first-ever broking arm of a bank to take membership of a commodity exchange by registering itself with NCDEX.

Mauritius regulator opens representative office in India

The Financial Services Commission, Mauritius has opened its representative office in Mumbai, a move that will further strengthen and deepen its partnership with its Indian counterparts.

  • The Financial Services Commission, is the integrated regulator for the non-bank financial services sector in Mauritius.

FIFA lifts ban on Kuwaiti football

FIFA President Gianni Infantino announced that a two-year ban imposed on Kuwait’s football federation has officially been lifted.

  • FIFA banned Kuwait’s national football federation in 2015 over alleged government interference in the running of the country’s football governing body.

Armed Forces Flag Day observed with pride and honour

The Armed Forces Flag Day is being observed on 7th December throughout the country. The day observed since 1949, has become a tradition to remember the sacrifices and commemorate the honour to the soldiers, airmen and sailors. It is dedicated towards collection of funds from people for the welfare of the Armed Forces personnel.
